My Heroes

Today I listened to a calypso by Denyse Plummer called "Heroes" which was one of the songs that won her the Calypso Monarch title in 2001. The other was in my opinion one of the greatest compositions ever "Nah Leaving" but this post isn't about calypso. Rather, it is about the plea that Denyse made for us to show appreciation and recognition for those persons who have inspired us and made a positive impact on our lives while they are alive.

She emphasised the chilling sentiments throughout the song that...
"We wait till we heroes dead to put a crown on they head."

I am inspired to pay homage and thank the heroes in my life that have had an impact on my journey so far. So here i go...
  • I'd like to thank my mother Denyse (not Plummer eh lol purely coincidental) for teaching me many life lessons. Most notably I learnt that anything I did I should do it to the best best of my ability no matter what it was from washing wares to studying for an exam she emphasised that I put my best foot forward. I also learnt through her actions what it meant to work hard as a single parent raising 4 young children on her own. For me my mother epitomised what it meant to work hard and it is from her I mimicked my work ethic style.

For this Mummy I crown you and pay homage to everything that you have done for me. You are my queen and I love you with all my heart.

  • My aunty Dena. Growing up with her she too thought me many things which to this day stay with me. She was my real life example of success and advancement. Seeing her advance in her career and education made me want the same and more for myself coupled with my own self-motivated desire to achieve. Aunty Dena also thought me to be open to new experiences, people and things in life. That happened simply through discussing and listening music and her appreciation for all genres. I ran with that concept and now try to keep an open mind about all things. Aunty was as I'm now thinking about it here is probably my main influencer in reading and love for literature. De amount of books that woman had! lol And to this day she still is always in the process of reading a book. Dena also had an influence on my sense of humor and whit scandalous, offbeat, sarcastic humor. :P
For those things Aunty Dena I say thank you, you have made a great Impact on my life and for that let me put a crown on your Goomba sized head :-D I love ya!
  • Aunty Donna in recent years I have admired how vocal you are for what you believe in and your rights. I've greatly respected that about you and it has allowed me the template I need to gain the ability to speak out more and stand up for myself which is critical in today's dog eat dog world.
For that Aunty Donna I say thank you and I put a crown on your head. Love you.
  • Samantha Cato my best friend and best man @ my wedding when I get married that should be funny seeing you in a suit lol. You too have inspired my work ethic and I know I'm not ready for you in that category nah! You are the most disciplined person I know and I admire you for that. I also hold in great esteem your "call it how you see it" disposition but most of all you passion for the environment. Not because I'm a big enviro freak or anything thats all you lol but because of your passion and commitment to a single belief and principle. Never change.
For those things Cato I put a crown on your head! Love you, you're my friend for life!
  •  Akeem you are a brave soul and have real belly! lol I admire your thoughts and your ability to think outside the box and your bravery to challenge the norm and not follow but lead and blaze your own trail. You make me believe that I am sane lol since I have a similar nature. The world needs more people like you. I wish you all the success in the world bro!
I crown you Mr. Jack sir. Keep on being you, I love you like a brother.

Thank you to all my heroes I salute you all. I pray that God richly blesses with your hearts desires for the positive impact that you all have made on me and my life. I appreciate and love you all.

Take in Denyse Plummer's "Heroes" and show the heroes in your life some appreciation today!
