In-Dependence

51st anniversary of our Independence
Cause for celebration, revelry and fireworks
In true Trini style we will get drunk, misbehave and get on wild
I smile
Thinking to myself how can we be an independent nation with dependent people
The irony of it all

Trini too small for this gimmie gimmie attitude
I don’t think this is what our nation’s leaders had in mind in 1962 when they lowered the Union Jack
We have a culture of wanting free ting
Not wanting to work for anything but still wanting
Not needing but wanting
We complain about the poor service at our hospitals, police stations and government ministries When it is we the people who work and manage these institutions
We complain about ourselves

The solution?
Fix you, fix me, fix we
Do the right thing, be accountable for our actions
Or lack of action
Our laid back attitude is to blame
Sometimes I wonder if our watchwords are still the same
Discipline Tolerance Production
We are the most in-disciplined people there are, we lack respect, courtesy and consideration
We see it every day, from driving on the shoulder, to no good mornings, to disregard for rules and for authority
Well tolerance has gone out the window, we are narrow minded, racist, prejudice and unaccepting of change
When a road has to fix we complain, and don’t talk for our politics its nigga people this and coolie people that and every tender and job selection is skewed by bias before it is even advertised
Production… Ha! I have to laugh yes!
When we all can’t wait for Friday, Frown at Monday’s and if a holiday falls on a Thursday we take the Friday off
But there are some things we are good at producing however
Murderers, child mothers and child fathers, cheats, liars, corrupt politicians and unruly people with no regard for the law or authority
I am proud to be a Trini!

Earth, Water and Fire
The nation has grounded to a slow halt
We have become contaminated
Our flame is dwindling
Red White and Black was supposed to represent courage, dedication, purity and equality
Ask yourself honestly
Does that represent who you are and what you believe in?

They say no man is an island
Sadly, we are an actual island with many men
A twin at that, fraternal so we are different
But let us as a people be resistant to mediocrity
Be persistent and more in touch with reality
As we strive to secure our longevity

Happy Independence my people, my sweet, sweet T&T
